Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the work of making your business the answer that AI tools give. When someone in Riyadh asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode “what is the best dental clinic near me”, AEO decides if your name appears. In Saudi Arabia, that means optimizing in both Arabic and English, building strong local trust signals, and making sure AI crawlers can read your site.
I have worked on Saudi search for years, and the biggest change I have seen is simple. People used to click ten blue links. Now many of them read one AI answer and act on it. If you are not in that answer, you are not in the race.
What is AEO?
AEO means structuring your content, website and brand presence so that AI systems can find it, understand it, trust it and quote it.
Here is how AEO compares with the terms you will hear:
| Term | Goal | Where it shows |
|---|---|---|
| SEO (search engine optimization) | Rank pages in search results | Google and Bing result pages |
| AEO (answer engine optimization) | Be the cited source or named brand in an answer | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, voice assistants |
| GEO (generative engine optimization) | Shape how generative AI describes and recommends your brand | ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Meta AI |
In practice, AEO and GEO overlap almost fully. I use AEO as the umbrella term in this guide. Good SEO is still the base. Most AI tools pull from pages that already rank well, so AEO builds on SEO, it does not replace it.
There are two kinds of AI visibility, and you want both:
- Citation: the AI links to your page as a source.
- Mention: the AI names your brand in its answer, even without a link.
Many Saudi businesses get neither. Some get cited for a blog post but never recommended by name. The strategies below cover both.
Why AEO matters in Saudi Arabia now
Three things changed at the same time.
- Arabic AI search arrived. Google expanded AI Mode to Modern Standard Arabic in October 2025, after an English launch in the Middle East in August 2025 (Cairo Scene). Arabic speakers now get full AI answers inside Google.
- Saudis adopted AI fast. Research by Public First for Google found 80% of Saudi adults have used AI tools and about 1 in 3 use them regularly (Google KSA report).
- National push. Vision 2030, SDAIA and large AI investments make AI part of daily life, from government services to shopping.
The result is more zero click searches. A user gets the answer, then calls, books or visits directly. Your traffic may drop while your brand still wins, but only if the AI names you.
Where Saudis ask questions today
Do not optimize for Google alone. Saudi users ask questions in many places:
| Platform | Why it matters in KSA |
|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Still the biggest source of search, now in Arabic and English |
| ChatGPT (with search) | Heavy use for research, comparisons and “best” questions |
| Gemini | Built into Android and Google apps, which most Saudis use |
| Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot | Popular with professionals and B2B buyers |
| Meta AI | Inside WhatsApp and Instagram, the apps Saudis open all day |
| HUMAIN Chat (built on the ALLaM Arabic model) | Saudi made, Arabic first assistant |
| TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, X | Social search drives local discovery and feeds what AI learns about brands |
Each tool uses different sources, but they reward the same basics: clear answers, a strong brand entity, and many trusted mentions.
How AI chooses its answers
You do not need to be an engineer, but you need this mental model.
- The question gets split. AI Mode and ChatGPT break one question into many smaller searches. Google calls this query fan out. “Best gym in Riyadh for women” becomes searches about prices, locations, reviews and opening hours.
- The AI retrieves pages. It pulls pages from a live search index. This is called retrieval augmented generation (RAG). If your page is blocked or not indexed, you are out.
- It picks clear passages. AI does not use your whole page. It lifts a short passage that answers one sub question cleanly.
- It checks agreement. If many trusted sources say the same thing about your brand, the AI trusts it. One website saying “we are the best” means little.
- It uses what it already knows. The model also has training data. If your brand appears often across the web, the model already “knows” you.
So AEO has three jobs: be retrievable, be quotable, and be confirmed by others.
The Saudi layer: what global guides miss
This is where most Saudi businesses lose, and where you can win fast.
Language: Arabic is not one language in search
Saudi users write in many styles:
- Modern Standard Arabic: “ما هي أفضل عيادة أسنان في الرياض”
- Saudi dialect: “وش أفضل عيادة أسنان بالرياض” or “أبي عيادة أسنان قريبة”
- Mixed Arabic and English: “أفضل clinic في الرياض”
- English: “best dental clinic Riyadh”
- Arabizi or transliteration of brand names: Jarir and جرير, Nahdi and النهدي
What to do:
- Write Arabic content natively. Machine translated Arabic reads badly and AI skips it.
- Answer the question in clear Modern Standard Arabic, but include the dialect phrases people use in headings and FAQs.
- Keep your brand name consistent in both scripts everywhere.
- Build separate Arabic and English content plans. The questions are often different, not just translated.
Intent: map real prompts, not keywords
Collect 30 to 50 real questions your customers ask. Great sources are your WhatsApp chats, call center notes, Google Business Profile questions and “People also ask” boxes. Group them into:
- Best and top: “أفضل مطعم عائلي في جدة”
- Price: “كم سعر تركيب الأسنان في الرياض”
- Trust: “هل متجر كذا موثوق”
- Comparison: “الفرق بين تابي وتمارا”
- Location: district level, like north Riyadh, Al Olaya, or Al Khobar
Trust signals Saudi AI answers look for
AI tools, and Saudi buyers, trust businesses that look real and registered. Show these on your site and profiles:
- Commercial Registration (CR) number and a link to your Saudi Business Center record
- VAT number from ZATCA
- Saudi national address
- Prices in SAR, including VAT where required
- Local payment options: Mada, Apple Pay, Tabby, Tamara
- Sector licenses: Ministry of Health, SFDA, SAMA, REGA, and others
- Maroof or similar verification for online stores
- Real Saudi team members, with names and roles
Seasons: publish before the peak
Saudi demand moves with the calendar. Plan AEO content for Ramadan, Eid al Fitr, Eid al Adha, White Friday, Founding Day (22 February), Saudi National Day (23 September), Riyadh Season and back to school. Add both Hijri and Gregorian dates. Publish four to six weeks early, because AI tools need time to find and trust new pages.
Technical AEO: let AI read your site
If AI cannot crawl your pages, nothing else matters. This is the most common problem I find on Saudi websites.
Allow AI crawlers
Check your robots.txt and firewall for these bots:
| Crawler | Company | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Googlebot | Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode | |
| Google-Extended | Gemini training (blocking it does not remove you from AI Overviews) | |
| OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | ChatGPT search and live browsing |
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Model training |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Perplexity answers |
| Bingbot | Microsoft | Bing, Copilot, and part of ChatGPT search |
| ClaudeBot | Anthropic | Claude |
Many Saudi sites use Cloudflare or a hosting firewall with “bot fight” settings. These often block AI crawlers by accident. Ask your developer to check the firewall logs, not just robots.txt.
Arabic technical hygiene
- Set
lang="ar"anddir="rtl"correctly on Arabic pages. - Use hreflang tags for ar-SA and en-SA versions.
- Render important content as HTML text. AI crawlers often skip content loaded late by JavaScript.
- Never put key answers, prices or menus only inside images or PDFs.
- Make pages fast on mobile. Most Saudi searches happen on phones.
- Submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools too. Bing data feeds Copilot and parts of ChatGPT.
Structured data (schema markup)
Schema helps AI understand who you are and what you offer. Focus on:
- Organization: name in Arabic and English, logo, CR, contact, and sameAs links to your social and directory profiles
- LocalBusiness: address, geo, opening hours, including Ramadan hours
- Product and Offer: price in SAR, availability
- Service: what you do and where
- Article with author: real authors with credentials
- FAQPage: Google no longer shows FAQ rich results for most sites, but the clean question and answer format still helps machines read your page
- Review and AggregateRating: only real reviews
About llms.txt: it is a proposed file that lists your key pages for AI tools. It is cheap to add, but no major AI search engine has confirmed they use it. Treat it as optional, not as a strategy.
Content that gets cited
Write answer first
- Start each page and each section with a direct answer in 40 to 60 words.
- Use real questions as headings, for example “How much does SEO cost in Riyadh?”
- Keep one idea per paragraph so AI can lift it cleanly.
- Use tables for prices, comparisons and specs. AI loves tables.
- Use numbered steps for processes.
- Define terms simply. A clear definition is often the passage AI quotes.
Add information gain
AI already has generic content. It needs something new from you. Examples:
- Real prices in SAR, updated with a date
- Your own data: “We analyzed 500 orders in Jeddah and found…”
- Local case studies with numbers
- Expert opinions from your team
- Photos and videos you made yourself
Show E-E-A-T
E-E-A-T means experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. Show real author names, their experience, when the page was last updated, and your sources. For health, finance and legal topics, get content reviewed by a licensed Saudi professional and say so on the page.
Pages that AI cites most
- Comparison pages (“X vs Y”)
- “Best in [city]” pages, written fairly, including honest pros and cons
- Pricing pages
- How to guides
- Glossaries and definition pages
- FAQ hubs built from real customer questions
Off site AEO: what others say about you
This is where most AI recommendations come from. Your own website is only one voice.
Build your brand entity
An entity is something Google and AI models recognize as a known thing, like a company, person or place. To become a strong entity:
- Use the same brand name, address and phone number everywhere, in Arabic and English.
- Claim your profiles on Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, LinkedIn, and main social platforms.
- Get a Wikipedia or Wikidata entry only if you are truly notable. Do not force it.
- Link all profiles with sameAs in your schema.
Google Business Profile is an AI source
For local questions, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini lean heavily on Google Maps data. Optimize:
- Business name, categories and description in Arabic and English
- Accurate hours, including Ramadan and Eid hours
- Regular photos and posts
- Reviews, especially detailed Arabic reviews that mention services and districts
- Replies to every review
Earn citations from Saudi sources
AI trusts consensus. Get mentioned on:
- Saudi news and business sites, such as Argaam, Sabq, Okaz, Arab News and Al Arabiya
- Industry directories and chambers of commerce
- Marketplaces like Noon, Amazon.sa, and your Salla or Zid store
- “Best of” lists and comparison articles on trusted blogs. When AI fans out a question, it often reads these lists.
Social and user content
Saudi discovery lives on TikTok, Snapchat, X, YouTube and Instagram. AI tools read public posts, reviews and forums. Keep a steady presence, work with real local creators, and add Arabic captions and transcripts to videos. Watch what people say about you, because AI will summarize it.
Advanced AEO
Optimize for query fan out
For each main topic, list the 10 to 15 sub questions AI will likely search: price, duration, risks, alternatives, location, reviews, “is it halal”, “is it licensed”. Answer each one somewhere on your site, in Arabic and English. The more sub questions you cover, the more often you get pulled in.
Fix wrong AI answers about your brand
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Mode about your business every month. Look for wrong prices, closed branches, old phone numbers, or confusion with a competitor. AI usually repeats a mistake it found somewhere, so find and fix the source: an old directory listing, an outdated page, or a wrong Google Business Profile field.
Get ready for AI agents
AI assistants are starting to compare products and complete tasks for users. Prepare with clean product feeds in Google Merchant Center, accurate stock and SAR prices, simple booking and checkout flows, and structured data on every product page.
Sector playbooks
| Sector | Top AEO priority | Key trust signal |
|---|---|---|
| Clinics and healthcare | Doctor profiles, treatment FAQs, prices | MOH license, reviewed by named doctors |
| Real estate | District guides, price per meter data | REGA license, Fal license number |
| Ecommerce | Product comparisons, delivery and return FAQs | CR, VAT, Maroof, Tabby and Tamara |
| Restaurants and cafes | Google Business Profile, menu as text, reviews | Accurate hours, Ramadan menus |
| B2B and SaaS | Comparison pages, case studies, integrations | Client logos, Saudi data hosting details |
| Education and training | Course comparisons, outcomes, fees | Accreditation, TVTC or ministry approval |
| Tourism and hospitality | Itineraries, seasonal guides, events | Tourism licenses, verified reviews |
Compliance
Follow the Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) when you collect data for forms, chat or tracking. Avoid health or finance claims you cannot prove. AI tools and Saudi regulators both punish misleading content.
How to measure AEO
AEO is harder to track than SEO, so combine several signals:
- Prompt tracking: test a fixed list of 20 to 50 prompts every month in Saudi dialect, Modern Standard Arabic and English, across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and Perplexity. Record if you are cited, mentioned, or missing.
- Share of voice: how often you appear compared with your top three competitors.
- AI referral traffic: in GA4, track visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com.
- Search Console: watch impressions and branded searches. AI Overviews and AI Mode data is included in the Performance report, not separated.
- Business results: calls, WhatsApp clicks, bookings and direction requests. Report these to management, not just traffic.
Most AEO tracking tools have weak Arabic support. Keep a manual check alongside any tool.
The 10 point AEO checkup
Score each area from 0 (missing) to 5 (excellent). A total under 25 means you are mostly invisible in AI answers.
| # | Area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | AI crawler access | robots.txt and firewall allow the main AI bots |
| 2 | Arabic content quality | Native Arabic, dialect questions covered, no machine translation |
| 3 | Answer first structure | Direct answers, question headings, tables |
| 4 | Schema and entity | Organization, LocalBusiness, sameAs, consistent names |
| 5 | Google Business Profile | Complete, active, strong Arabic reviews |
| 6 | Saudi trust signals | CR, VAT, national address, SAR prices, licenses |
| 7 | Third party mentions | Saudi news, directories, comparison lists |
| 8 | Social presence | Active on the platforms your buyers use |
| 9 | Current AI visibility | Results from 20 to 30 real prompts across 4 AI tools |
| 10 | Tracking | GA4 AI referrals, prompt log, lead tracking |
Your 90 day plan:
- Days 1 to 30: fix crawler access, schema, Google Business Profile and trust signals. Run your first prompt test.
- Days 31 to 60: rewrite your top 10 pages answer first, add Arabic FAQ hubs, and publish one comparison page and one pricing page.
- Days 61 to 90: start digital PR for Saudi mentions, grow reviews, prepare seasonal content, and run the prompt test again to compare.
Common AEO mistakes in Saudi Arabia
- Translating English pages to Arabic with a machine
- Blocking AI bots through Cloudflare without knowing
- Hiding prices because “customers should call”
- Ignoring Google Business Profile and reviews
- Writing only about yourself, with no fair comparisons
- Using old tactics like keyword stuffing or fake reviews
- Expecting results in two weeks. AEO usually takes three to six months.
- Promising clients guaranteed AI rankings. No one can guarantee them, because answers change by user, session and language.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
Yes, but they work together. SEO helps you rank. AEO helps AI quote and recommend you. Strong SEO makes AEO much easier.
Does AEO work in Arabic?
Yes. Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and HUMAIN Chat all answer in Arabic. Arabic competition is also lower than English, so good Arabic content can win faster.
How long does AEO take?
Technical fixes can show effect in weeks. Being recommended by name usually takes three to six months of steady work.
How much does AEO cost in Saudi Arabia?
Pricing depends on your website size, sector, and competition. Many businesses add AEO to their existing SEO plan rather than paying for it separately. At Nukhta Studio, AEO services start from SAR 3,000.
Can I get my business recommended by ChatGPT by paying?
You cannot pay for it. You earn it through clear content, strong reviews, trusted mentions and a site AI can crawl.
Do I need llms.txt?
It is optional. It will not hurt, but focus first on crawler access, content and mentions.
Will AEO reduce my website traffic?
Some informational clicks may drop because users get answers directly. But the visits and calls that do come from AI answers often convert better.
